Named “the capitol of Islamic Culture” for its efforts to preserve and promote culture, Sharjah is a great place to explore how tradition and modern life converge. Develop your Arabic language skills with courses taught in English American University of Sharjah (AUS), across an array of subjects, including biology, chemistry, communications, literature, engineering, environmental science, history, mathematics, and more.
AUS offers a wonderful study abroad destination for a variety of reasons:
- Comfortable Home Base. We offer an accredited American-style education grounded in the Gulf Arab culture. All programs are co-educational, with English-language of instruction. Enjoy our beautiful, fully equipped campus, convenient dorms, and a full variety of cultural and extracurricular activities.
- Diversity of our students and faculty. Times Higher Education has twice ranked AUS as the university with the highest percentage of international students in the world. Our more than 5,000 students come from approximately 90 different nationalities across the Arab/Islamic world and beyond. Students can certainly expect to learn about Emirati and Gulf Arab culture, but also many cultures across the Arab and Islamic world.
- Constant pace of change and development. The UAE is a work-in-progress with an inspiring vision and so much energy. Constant change is the norm, in almost every possible aspect of life.
- Centrality within the world, and within the Emirates. The UAE is literally in the center of the world map, surrounded by wonderful international airports and airlines with direct flights to almost any major city in the world. Students are able to easily travel and explore the globe from the UAE as a base. Within the UAE, AUS holds a very central location within the Emirates. From our campus, we have access to at least three very different cultures. Twenty minutes out our front gate in one direction brings you to the futuristic city of Dubai; 20 minutes out of our front gate in a slightly different direction brings you to historical downtown Sharjah, celebrated by UNESCO (1998) and ISESCO (2014) as the Cultural Capital of the Arab and Islamic World. Sharjah is a traditional Arab city where most of the development is about preserving and protecting the Arab and Islamic culture. In addition, Sharjah contains wonderful world-class museums and academic institutions. Finally, 20 minutes out our back gate and you find yourself in the open desert, with archaeological digs from the Iron Age.
